When people think about Worship & Music Conference, they often picture handbells, adult choirs, and organ recitals. And while those elements are certainly an important part of the experience, there’s another part of the conference that also deserves some attention: the youth programming. Children and youth who have completed third through twelfth grade are eligible to sign up for a variety of offerings during the conference developed specifically with their age and experience in mind. When they attend, they are considered full, active participants and join the entire community in learning new skills, sharing their talents, and making new friends. In this way, Worship & Music Conference plays a crucial role in developing young leaders by providing youth with meaningful opportunities for musical growth, faith formation, and lasting community.
Each day, youth participants engage in their own track of programming that blends worship music, arts, and fellowship. Through choirs, instrumental ensembles, movement, bible study, and more, youth are invited to grow in ways that are both challenging and fun. Experienced directors and clinicians guide them through rehearsals that build skills while encouraging confidence and collaboration. Youth leadership is nurtured during daily worship services. At the end of the week, youth ensembles share what they’ve learned during the closing concert, offering a powerful and meaningful contribution to the conference as a whole.
In addition to musical instruction, middle and high school youth also participate in small groups and faith formation sessions that provide opportunities to make new friends and deepen relationships. These gatherings create space for honest conversations about faith, identity, and the world around us. In a supportive and welcoming environment, youth are encouraged to ask questions, share their stories, and deepen their understanding of what it means to live out their faith.
Expanding on this, it’s clear that one of the most impactful aspects of the youth program is the sense of community that forms over the course of the week. Youth come from a variety of churches and backgrounds yet quickly find common ground through shared experiences. Whether it’s singing together, laughing over meals, or reflecting on what they’ve learned in small group, participants are forming lasting connections throughout every moment of the conference.
For families and church leaders, Worship & Music Conference offers a unique opportunity to invest in younger generations. Youth return home inspired and energized, having expanded their skills or discovered new gifts that they are eager to share. Moreso, they’ve built and strengthened relationships that encourage them to stay engaged in their faith.
If you are concerned about cost, there are several scholarships available through the Presbyterian Association of Musicians (PAM) which provide assistance for youth and chaperones with financial need. Scholarships may help with conference fees, housing, meals, and/or transportation. While the priority deadline has passed, applications will continue to be accepted until funds have been exhausted.
